As an occupational therapy clinician, I was excited to land my first adjunct teaching job. The human resources person rushed me through the college's onboarding process, to make sure I would be in place to teach a course that was starting the next week. I learned very little about the college. The chair of the department gave me a pep talk with lots of words of encouragement as he handed me the syllabus and the textbook. He offered no professional development to prepare me for this new role of an adjunct educator! I had never taught before but felt my clinical experience would easily transfer into teaching future clinicians. I was really wrong! Fast-forward, I have been in academia now for over twenty years and have earned the title of tenured associate professor.
Unfortunately, limited or no professional development still exists for adjunct, new, or existing educators that meet the unique needs of occupational therapy educators. I did not want another clinician to experience the "building the plane as it is flying in the air syndrome" without support. I want to increase the diversity, equity, and inclusion of among occupational therapy educators within academia or interested in making a transition into academia. This company is here for Academia to be Re-Envisioned. Let's work together to help occupational therapy educators excel in academia!
